About Randall Dill
"To take a photograph is to align the head, the eye, and the heart."
- Henri Cartier-Bresson, 20th century photographer
In the mid 1960's my father put a 35mm range finder camera in my hands. As a young boy then, I became challenged to explore what that little camera could do. I soon learned that a camera is only a tool - and it was up to me to actually create a final image in much the same way a painter would use their brush and palette. I studied the works of famous photographers while developing a keen sense of observation - using composition rules, light, shape, and form to produce a photograph as an art form. As a self-taught photographer, I started competing nationally among seasoned photographers, other visual artists, and even my own father who taught me the basics. Even though I am a product of the pre-digital age, I am always challenged with new photographic technology, while still applying what I had learned at an early age.
As a trained church musician for most of my working years, my intrinsic nature is to perform and create aurally. Photography is my flip side - the visual side. When I get behind a camera, I work hard to get just the right image at just the right time. Producing the best possible image may require post processing techniques and some manipulation. Knowing just how much of that to apply should be relative to the subject and what I want to convey to the viewer. Having been shaped from "old school" photography, more importantly I try to capture an image as the eyes naturally see it - and then secondly attempt to recreate and enhance what my eyes saw and felt - using post processing software. I've often wondered what Ansel Adams would have thought about Lightroom and Photoshop.
Many of my photographs have nostalgic themes which may stimulate an emotion or perhaps evoke a memory, while other images are abstract or experimental. My photography is both subjective and objective. I enjoy the challenge of turning the ordinary into the extra-ordinary. What you see here is an eclectic portfolio of fine art images suitable for your home and office, for note cards, or for lifestyle products available on this site. I do bring a lot of passion to this art, and desire that my images truly reflect that passion!
Henry David Thoreau once said: "It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see."
